Adhesive Tape Selection & Application Technical Reference

1. What is PSA Pressure‑Sensitive Adhesive Tape

Pressure‑Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) tapes achieve instant bonding under slight pressure without heating, solvent or curing. Normally no adhesive residue or contamination will be left on substrates after removal. Widely applied in electronics, industrial assembly, fixing & laminating scenarios.

2. Common Misconceptions for Tape Selection

  1. Tack cannot be judged by hand‑touch. Sweat and grease on hands cause large deviation; human skin has different properties from real substrates.

  2. Steel‑plate peel strength test applies only to high‑surface‑energy polar materials, with limited reference for low‑surface‑tension materials such as PE.

  3. Test data from other similar‑material products is for reference only. Different production processes and surface treatments lead to varied bonding performance.

  4. High‑end substrates or premium glue do not always deliver better results. There is no universal tape, only tape fit for specific working conditions.

Correct method: Run tests with actual customer substrates. Degrease surfaces with alcohol before bonding for reliable test data.

Bonding for low surface energy materials; insulating & flame retardant tape; high temperature & low temperature tape;
2. Not suitable for electrolyte resistant tape

There are four mainstream tape types in the market: acrylate tape, rubber‑based tape, polyurethane tape and silicone tape.

These tapes vary in aging resistance, adhesion, corrosion & solvent resistance, compatibility with low‑surface‑energy materials, cost and temperature tolerance. They can meet diverse working conditions including medical application, low‑temperature, high‑temperature, insulation and flame‑retardant scenarios.

4. Tips for Bonding Rough‑Surface Materials

Refer to the four tips below when selecting tapes for rough‑surface substrates:

  1. Adopt sufficient adhesive thickness. For 30 μm roughness substrate, 40‑50 μm adhesive layer is recommended.

  2. Select soft adhesive with high initial tack.

  3. Prefer soft thin backings: sponge tape, PE tape, PVC tape, thin‑gauge PET tape.

  4. Choose adhesives with surface energy close to substrates: rubber‑based, silicone‑based or modified acrylic series.

5. Effect of Ambient Temperature on Bonding Performance

Excessively low ambient / substrate temperature reduces initial tack of adhesive. Proper temperature rise helps restore bonding performance. ‑ Low‑temperature tape: maintains good initial tack under cold conditions, yet holding power at room & high temperature will be slightly lower. ‑ If both low‑temperature service and excellent high‑temperature holding strength are required, silicone tape is recommended.

6. Introduction to Hot‑Melt Tape

Hot‑melt adhesive tape is temperature‑sensitive. Optimal bonding strength is achieved only upon heating to target temperature. It shows little tack at room temperature but keeps rubber‑like elasticity, resisting sliding and deformation under force. Ideal for structural fastening and bundling where conventional PSA tapes cannot perform well.

7. Key Performance Indicators of PSA Tape

‑ Standard indicators: initial tack, adhesion strength, peel resistance (room‑temperature test) ‑ Special specifications: high‑temperature resistance, water resistance, warp resistance, electrolyte resistance (for lithium‑battery), transparency (OCA optical adhesive), color, thickness, die‑cutting without glue overflow and other customized requirements.

8. Adhesive Solution Concept

There is no one‑size‑fits‑all tape. Products shall be selected or customized according to customers’ real‑world substrates and application conditions.

Even for identical base‑material grades, surface energy will change due to manufacturing process, plasticizer migration, anodizing, anti‑rust oil and other factors, resulting in big differences in bonding performance. Sample testing targeting real‑use scenarios is highly recommended to verify feasibility.
